this is where we would pick up our fresh pasta every morning when I was at Valgiano, the vineyard in Tuscany, Italy. it was there I really learned to eat. Growing up in vain Los Angeles, I wasn’t accustomed to eating three meals per day. it was life changing. I started having vivid dreams every night, something i wasn’t used to.

we walked for three hours to find some mushrooms to eat near the vineyard i was staying at. we only ended up finding these, and they’re poisonous.

fish in a grocery store near Lucca, Tuscany. after a week on the vineyard this was my first time in a super market. we were looking for sugar to make tiramisu. most of our food previous to this during that week had come from our neighbor’s farm.

sometimes you go out for food just to feel safe and to be around other people, it helps especially in countries where you don’t speak the language. i’d end up eating like 6 small meals per day just to occupy my time.

i decided to go to versailles one afternoon after missing my flight to Berlin (twice) i was so depressed i knew i had to do something wild to stay sane. the train took about 45 minutes. on the way i met a wonderful man named Sergio from Spain. we talked the whole way, even though his english wasn’t great, about traveling, beauty and being alone.

it was crowded but as i walked through one of the great halls a man walked passed and complimented me on my Bernhard Wilhelm shoes. he ended up being from New York, he had come just for the weekend of his birthday. we spent the rest of the day walking around the palace together and then met the next morning to visit the Louvre. he ended up coming to LA for my birthday one month later.

it is really fun to buy cosmetics in Europe. the packaging is unfamiliar and everything feels fancy…

this is me, Maura Camilla Coco and Jamison Gilmour. more on Maura later. She’s the heart of Berlin and I stayed with her for a week and a half.

this is Jamison in Maura’s apartment in Berlin. Graham Haught made the drawings on the wall.
Maura has two mattresses in her room because she has guests so often.

i had to have the same breakfast and coffee every morning no matter where i was so that i could stay sane. consistency is important if you’re trying to adapt to a wide variety of environments. you have to bring yourself with you somehow, even in the most simple ways.

one morning i was woken up by Maura and two of her friends at seven in the morning. they had just returned from the club. they were singing and dancing and playing dress up. it was one of my favorite mornings. we stayed in playing around like puppies for a couple of hours. i went out to get us some strawberry juice, maura’s favorite. when i returned, they were all asleep in her bed.

at the vineyard in tuscany i learned to shop only at farmers markets. people at farmers markets want to create community while distributing really fresh and beautiful food.

Tenuta di Valgiano, Tuscany, Italy. I ended up here looking for a place return to the soil after two months of hopping around the big cities. food was a ritual there. glasses upon glasses of wine per meal. more olive oil, pasta and cheese than i have ever eaten. vegetables from our neighbor’s farm. everything prepared with so much respect and care. total shift in perspective. Eating this way caused me to start dreaming like i never had before. it was the happiest week of my life.
